Coreopsis 'Cosmic Eye'

Cosmic Eye tickseed

Current rating: 3.0?

Big Bang™ Series

Size: 9” x 18” (h x w)

Bloom Time: Early June – late October.  Peak in mid-July and early September.

Weeks in Bloom: 22 weeks

Flower Size: 1 ¾” diameter

Disease Resistance: Excellent.  No disease observed.

Coreopsis ‘Cosmic Eye’ is a relatively short cultivar at only 9” tall.  Bright yellow flowers with deep red centers helped this cultivar rate well for seven weeks this summer.  Unfortunately, the habit was open and slightly sprawling.  By fall many leaves had fallen off, leaving spindly, stick-like stems.  A long, 22 week bloom period and excellent disease resistance make this a very promising cultivar.

Cosmic Eye tickseed

Current rating: 3.2 ?

Series: Big Bang™

Size: 16” x 28” (h x w)

Bloom Time: Mid-June – mid-October.  Peak in early July.

Weeks in Bloom: 17 weeks

Flower Size: 1 ¾” diameter

Disease Resistance: Excellent.  No disease observed.

All five plants of Coreopsis ‘Cosmic Eye’ failed to overwinter and replacements were planted in early May.  These new plants were healthy but lacked a dense and robust habit.  ‘Cosmic Eye’ flowered well into the fall, but the plants gradually went downhill to the point where the flowers were held on leafless stems.  The one plant that was cut back in July did look healthier than the others.

Note:  Issues concerning hardiness will be factored into the numerical rating at the end of the third season.

Coreopsis ‘Cosmic Eye’ is a low-growing cultivar that has yellow flowers with a dark maroon center. The prolific and long-lasting floral display was quite impressive; however, the plants seemed unable to keep up. ‘Cosmic Eye’ failed to survive a single winter in our trial, even though it was given a second chance at the beginning of year two.  During both years, the plant quality seemed to greatly diminish as the season progressed, so that in late summer there was little to no foliage remaining on the plants. By September, they often looked like leafless, flowering stems. Given the poor plant quality at the end of the season, it was not surprising that all five plants failed to return each following spring.
