Bloom Time: Did not flower.

Weeks in Bloom: N/A

Flower Size: N/A

Disease Resistance: Excellent.  Powdery mildew (1 week).

Coreopsis ‘Tequila Sunrise’ did not bloom this year.  Luckily the multicolored, green, yellow and pink foliage was attractive even when the plant was not in flower.  The plants showed excellent resistance to powdery mildew.  However, we did lose two plants over the course of the season.

Coreopsis 'Tequila Sunrise'

Tequila Sunrise tickseed

Current rating: 4.1 ?

Size: 16” x 16” (h x w)

Bloom Time: Late May – early August.  Peak in early June.

Weeks in Bloom: 10 weeks

Flower Size: 2” diameter

Disease Resistance: Fair.  Powdery mildew (2 weeks).  Downy mildew (5 weeks).

All five plants of Coreopsis ‘Tequila Sunrise’ failed to overwinter.  Replacements were planted in early May.  These new plants were much larger than the original plants and performed very well for the first half of the season.  The flowers were incredibly numerous and lasted for several weeks.  Of course, the tricolored foliage is attractive even without flowers.  Unfortunately, ‘Tequila Sunrise’ is susceptible to downy mildew, and the disease quickly reduced the quality of the plants.  By early September they were severely defoliated.  We also noticed several reversions occurring on each plant, where whole branches would have green foliage.  Such reversions are common on variegated plants, but in time they can overcome the variegated branches if not removed.

Note:  Issues concerning hardiness will be factored into the numerical rating at the end of the third season.

Current rating: Died during Year 3 ?

Size: 12” x16” (h x w)

Bloom Time: June - July

Weeks in Bloom: 8 weeks

Flower Size: 2” diameter

Disease Resistance: Prone to powdery mildew and downy mildew

Coreopsis ‘Tequila Sunrise’ is grown for its multicolored, variegated leaves. The ornamental foliage is a great benefit when ‘Tequila Sunrise’ is not in bloom. Unfortunately, this cultivar did not perform very well. It failed to overwinter during the first year. Replacements were planted the following spring, and those plants were plagued by downy mildew which contributed to their overall decline by the end of the second year. Given the poor health of ‘Tequila Sunrise’ at the end of that year, it was no surprise that none of the plants survived the winter.
